What Products Should I Recommend to My Clients Who Have Acne?
Skin care clients who are suffering with acne usually consider it a major problem. It not only affects their appearance, but their self confidence. Wanting to present a more attractive face to the world, they look to you, their skin care professional, to help them get smoother skin and prevent future breakouts. Here are some guidelines for how to help your acne-prone clients find effective products that will give them the results they are looking for.
Start With a Good Cleanser
Clients should be washing their faces just twice a day and maybe again right after a heavy workout. Cleansers containing benzoyl peroxide will start the process of getting rid of pimples and keep it going all day long. Vivant Skin Care's BP 3% Acne Wash and BP 3% Exfoliating Cleanser are gentle enough for daily use and are effective for treating acne, especially if used as part of a complete skin care regimen that includes a toner and corrector.
Benzoyl peroxide can cause hyperpigmentation for darker skin types, so the AHA Mandelic Acid is a good alternative that is safe to recommend for any color skin. Mandelic acid will help get rid of dead skin cells and is gentler than some other AHA treatments. Vivant Skin Care's Mandelic Acid 3-in-1 Exfoliating Cleanser is perfect for those with oily skin who are prone to breakouts as well as those who have acne scarring from previous breakouts.
Add a Serum for Concentrated Treatment
Some cases of acne need more than just a cleanser to keep skin clear. Using a toner or serum can restore balance to your clients' skin so that breakouts become nothing more than a bad memory. Vivant Skin Care has toners and serums with varying levels of mandelic acid. Clients typically start with a lower concentration and work up to a higher level if needed. 3% Mandelic Acid 3-in-1 Toner has the lowest concentration; clients can move to Vivant Skin Care's 15% Mandelic Acid 3-in-1 Serum once they have acclimated to the 8% concentration.
What About Sensitive Skin?
Clients with sensitive skin have different needs. Many BP and Glycolic acid solutions are too irritating for these acne sufferers, many of whom deal with rosacea or eczema in addition to their acne. Vivant Skin Care's Green Tea Antioxidant Cleanser dissolves dirt, oil and makeup without stripping the skin. Totaloe™ Calming and Hydrating Gel is oil free and contains aloe and plant extracts to soothe irritated skin.
Remind Clients to Give New Treatments Time
It can take up to eight weeks of faithful use for a new treatment to show results, so clients may need to have some patience as they try to find a skin care regimen that works for them. Regular extractions help to control the client's acne faster. Remind clients not to spot treat. Acne under the skin is in different stages and treating the entire area helps to stop the acne process. If after eight weeks a client is not experiencing any lessening of the acne, it may be time to try another treatment option.
Some redness and irritation is normal with any new treatment. If redness does occur initially, advise clients to stop using the product until the redness subsides, then reintroduce it slowly, maybe every 2-3 days, until skin begins to acclimate. Over time, increasing the concentration of the toner or serum will expedite and maintain the best results.
