Good advice on defending your skin from the dark spots that creep in on the heels of UV exposure, age, hormones or inflammation.
Limit UV Exposure
Not all hyperpigmentation is caused by the sun—but sun exposure exacerbates all types.
Melasma is caused by hormones.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is caused by an injury to the skin, such as acne lesions, bug bites, cuts, or any inflammatory response.
Age spots (solar lentigines) are a direct result of years of damaging UV exposure.
Your first line of defense in all cases is to reduce UV exposure. Wear sunscreen, even when you’re just heading out to the market, and keep in mind that damaging UV rays are not stopped by the windshield in your car. UV exposure happens daily—and consistently—whether you realize it or not.
Start Early
Don’t wait until age spots appear. Getting rid of them is far more difficult than preventing them in the first place.
When you’re still in your twenties or thirties, begin using a daily serum with proven brightening and pigment-regulating ingredients like kojic acid, lactic acid, and niacinamide. These ingredients work deep within the skin to help prevent excess melanin production before visible dark spots develop.
- Kojic acid + lactic acid help inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin synthesis
- Niacinamide helps inhibit the transfer of melanosomes (melanin-containing cells) to keratinocytes at the epidermal level
Vivant’s Derm-A-Gel® combines vitamin A with kojic and lactic acids, plus niacinamide, making it an effective early defense strategy to help prevent the formation of discoloration.
Take Down Discoloration With Exfoliation
For dark spots that have already appeared, regular exfoliation is essential.
Exfoliation helps bring pigmentation to the surface and lift it away more efficiently by accelerating the skin’s natural cell turnover process. This gradual shedding of darkened, damaged skin allows fresh, new, brighter skin to emerge over time.
This is not an overnight fix—it’s a controlled, consistent process that is key to achieving a more even-looking skin tone.
Corrective ingredients that support this process include:
- Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs)
- REt (RP)™ Retinoid
- Clinical Mandelic Acid
Combine Brighteners + Exfoliants for Better Results
Vivant’s Derm-A-Gel® is an ideal starting point, combining REt (RP)™ with kojic and lactic acids to help support gentle cell turnover while improving the appearance of uneven skin tone. This type of formula allows you to begin addressing discoloration while helping keep skin balanced and comfortable.
For those already acclimated to exfoliating acids and vitamin A, Exfol-A™ builds on this approach with glycolic, kojic, and lactic acids for more intensive exfoliation. Exfol-A™ Forté, the next level up, is further enhanced with salicylic and citric acids to support a more advanced exfoliation step.
Similarly, Our Clinical Mandelic Serum is available in both 8% and 15% strengths, offering a flexible approach to exfoliation. Lower strengths can be incorporated earlier, while higher concentrations are best suited for skin that is already acclimated to acid-based treatments—particularly for those prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from acne lesions, bug bites, cuts, or other inflammatory responses.
Think Zinc
Don’t forget about diet. A deficiency in zinc is associated with excess melanin synthesis. Be sure you’re getting enough of this important mineral by eating zinc-rich foods. Good sources are spinach, beef, shrimp, peanuts, kidney beans and flax seeds.
Get An Antioxidant Boost
Give your skin some added defense by creating an antioxidant firewall.
Vivant’s Pure C + E pairs two well-known antioxidants, vitamins C and E, in a synergistic formula designed to help neutralize free radicals and support the skin against environmental stressors. This combination also helps promote a more radiant, even-looking complexion. When applied before sun exposure, vitamins C and E are known to enhance the skin’s natural defenses against visible signs of photoaging.
Put Time On Your Side
Remember that correcting an imbalance of pigmentation doesn’t happen overnight. Results begin deep within the skin and move toward the surface. Not the other way round. It will take approximately eight weeks to achieve visible results. Be patient.
