Aloe and vitamin A: Perfect Allies in the Fight Against Acne

Aloe and vitamin A: Perfect Allies in the Fight Against Acne

We’ve long recommended Totaloe Calming and Hydrating Gel for inflamed, acne-prone skin because of its soothing, non-comedogenic properties. Now, there’s even more reason to reach for the Totaloe when you’re fighting acne. Using aloe along with a retinoid has been shown to improve the effectiveness of the retinoid treatment.

In a randomized, double-blind, 8-week trial, researchers evaluated inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesion scores in 60 subjects with mild to moderate acne vulgaris using tretinoin (prescription-strength retinoid) alone or combined with aloe vera gel. The result? Using both reduced acne significantly more than the retinoid alone—by 90 percent versus 65 percent—and also tamped down skin redness.

Most moisturizers work at odds with vitamin A therapy (retinoids). The job of vitamin A is to boost cellular turnover and peel out impactions. Drying and flaking is a natural part of that process as dead cells are sloughed off to reveal fresh new skin. Moisturizers cause the dead cells to matt down, clogging pores and slowing turnover.

Aloe is different. The gel form means it doesn’t sit on the surface of the skin but is quickly absorbed, so it doesn’t disrupt the action of the vitamin A, but does give skin needed hydration.

Additionally, aloe has potent anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that make it a staunch foe of acne. Aloe contains no less than six antiseptic agents: salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamonic acid, phenols, lupeol, and sulfur to fight against the bacteria that cause acne in the first place.

Plus, the glycoproteins and polysaccharides in aloe nourish and strengthen skin structure, aid in wound healing, and boost collagen production, all of which can help to reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Aloe and vitamin A are the perfect allies in the fight against acne. And the aloe in Vivant’s Totaloe is the ideal version of this natural healer as we use only whole leaf aloe barbadensis to get every bit of benefit available.

Apply your Vivant Vitamin A serum first and allow it to fully absorb and dry on skin before applying Totaloe Calming and Hydrating Gel.
