Why the Whole World Is Falling in Love With Mandelic Acid

It seems 2019 was the year the world finally discovered mandelic acid. Google searches for this “new” superstar more than doubled in the last twelve months. “Why is mandelic acid only just coming to the forefront of mainstream beauty,” the UK’s Stylist Magazine queried in a 2019 article touting the benefits of this AHA powerhouse. It’s an excellent question. Since this gentle multi-tasker has been a mainstay of the Vivant product line for decades, we’re a little surprised to see it trending as the next big thing.

Vivant formulator Dr. James Fulton was among the first to recognize and leverage the benefits of this unique multi-tasker. He originally developed mandelic acid as a way to treat acne in darker skin tones prone to hyperpigmentation. It proved remarkably effective for that and much more.

Here are all the reasons the world is crushing on mandelic acid, and why it’s always been our true love.

Mandelic acid (derived from bitter almonds) does all the things other alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) do, and more. What really sets it apart is its gentle action. It smooths texture and enhances glow without the risk of redness and irritation.

Mandelic acid has a larger molecular structure than other acids, nearly twice the size of glycolic’s, which means it’s absorbed into the skin at a slower rate. It’s the tortoise and hare story. Results can take a bit longer than with an acid like glycolic, but slow and steady ultimately wins the race.

The benefits of this over-achieving AHA go beyond the abilities of most other acids. In addition to micro-exfoliating properties, Mandelic Acid is antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory. Additionally, it acts to inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme that stimulates melanin production, making it a natural brightener. It’s ideal for all skin types and tones. What can mandelic do for your skin?

Mandelic Acid for Acne

In addition to being an excellent exfoliator, mandelic acid has strong antibacterial properties. Mandelic acid clears away impactions and fights acne bacteria in the pore. Skin texture becomes smoother and complexion clearer. Mandelic acid also helps to fade dark marks left behind by acne because of its melanin-inhibiting properties.

For treating acne, Mandelic Acid can be paired with a vitamin A serum. The vitamin A will peel impactions more rapidly while the mandelic kills bacteria and reduces the chances of scarring. Try 8% Mandelic Acid 3-In-1 Serum with Derm-A-Gel Daily Vitamin A.

When your skin has acclimated, and you’re ready to push your results further, you can move up to the next level of each. We also recommend one of Vivant’s Mandelic Acid 3-In-1 Wash or Exfoliating Cleanser

Mandelic Acid for Signs of Aging

Mandelic acid accelerates cell turnover by removing dead skin cells and speeding renewal. This thinning of the stratum corneum improves texture, reduces the appearance of fine lines, and turns skin from dull to luminous. For added plumping benefit, pair 8% Mandelic Acid 3-In-1 Serum with Rejuv Rx Peptide Concentrate.

Mandelic Acid for Hyperpigmentation

Mandelic acid enhances brightness in two ways. It inhibits the melanin-producing enzyme tyrosinase to block pigment from forming. As mandelic acid exfoliates dead cells from the surface, it helps lift existing pigment. And because it’s non-irritating, it won’t trigger hyperpigmentation in sensitive or dark skin tones the way some acids can.

If hyperpigmentation is your main concern, we recommend a full mandelic acid regimen—cleanser, toner, and serum—along with a booster of Spin Trap Antioxidant Serum, which is a therapeutic blend of vitamins C & E to brighten skin and repair photodamage. Sunscreen is a must.

Mandelic acid is the skin care trifecta, targets the three big issues: acne, aging, and irregular pigmentation. Whatever your issue, mandelic acid can help. Check out Vivant’s complete line of mandelic acid products for your ideal skin care solution.
