What if the Best Dandruff Shampoo is Not a Dandruff Shampoo at All?

One of our Vivant loyalists recently made us aware of an amazing benefit of our Green Tea Antioxidant Cleanser that even we hadn’t considered. After running out of his dandruff shampoo, he reached for the bottle of Green Tea Antioxidant Cleanser he regularly used on his face.

We’ve always recommended Green Tea Antioxidant Cleanser as a body wash and shampoo, so this was not a great leap, and because he loved the way it left his face feeling, he knew it wouldn’t dry his scalp. But he wasn’t prepared for the result. After a just a couple of shampoos, he noticed his scalp was clear. No more flaking. No more dryness. No more itching. His dandruff had cleared up, and his scalp felt hydrated and renewed.

It made perfect sense because we know that green tea is loaded with the flavonoid compound epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), which is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and has been shown to reduce sebum production. Green tea is also rich in antioxidant, cell regenerating vitamins C and E.

A little research led us to discover that many people use green tea as a home remedy for dandruff and that there has even been a study comparing a green tea-based shampoo with the ketoconazole and zinc pyrithione shampoos that are common treatments for scalp seborrheic dermatitis. The green tea shampoo in the study was found to be just as effective and actually superior when it came to reducing redness associated with seborrheic dermatitis.

As a shampoo, our Green Tea Antioxidant Cleanser is light, mild, non-drying with a fresh, somewhat grassy fragrance. And it does not contain the harsh, potentially irritating chemicals common to dandruff shampoos. And, of course, it’s a positively stellar face wash. That’s a win-win.

So, while this is just one customer’s story and further research may be warranted, we think it’s worth giving your regular dandruff shampoo a break and trying Green Tea Antioxidant Cleanser as a healthier, more nourishing alternative. If you try it, let us know how it works for you.
