Resolution 2018: Commit To Clear

Resolution 2018: Commit To Clear

Whether you’re seventeen or forty-seven, if you struggle with acne, you know that it can be a many-headed beast that refuses to die. To defeat it, you need the right weapons and solid battle plan. Make 2018 your year to clear, control, and conquer.

Develop a consistent routine. Your most important strategy is consistency. Find a routine that works for you and stick to it religiously. You may be tempted to slack off when your skin is looking clear, but this is not a one and done game. Acne is happening under the skin long before it appears as a pimple. Inflammation at the cellular level creates oxidative stress in the sebum follicle leading to a proliferation of dead skin cells and clogged pores that allow acne bacteria to thrive. So while things look good on the surface, trouble may be brewing underneath.

Staying on top of your routine will not only extend your success, it will help to avoid scarring by avoiding breakouts in the first place. Your basic routine should include a cleanser, toner, corrective serum, and sunscreen. Vivant’s Skin Fitness System makes it simple to stay on course.

Own your diet. Tweak your diet to avoid foods that cause inflammation like sugar, saturated fat, simple carbs, processed meats, artificial sweeteners, and excess alcohol. Opt for an antioxidant-rich diet loaded with leafy greens, nuts, colorful fruits and vegetables, healthy fats like those found in salmon, avocados, and olive oil. Dairy, gluten, and soy can be triggers for some people. If you’re eating healthy and still experiencing breakouts, try removing these from your diet one at a time to gauge your skin’s reaction.

Sleep for repair. There’s a reason the “sleep space” (the market for all things sleep-related) has become a $32 billion dollar industry with scientists and inventors looking for new and better ways to improve sleep.

Sleep is monumentally important to health and well-being, including that of your skin. Your cells need this invaluable repair time. Lack of sleep raises levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which results in increased inflammation, one of the key breakout triggers. Lack of sleep also results in less bloodflow and oxygen getting to the skin cells, which makes skin look sallow and dull. Collagen breakdown, puffy eyes, and dark circles are more of the consequences of poor sleep.

Go pro. A visit to the esthetician is not a luxury. It’s a necessity. If you’ve never been, you will be amazed at the difference regular professional treatments can make to support your home care. It’s a bit like the difference between washing your car and paying for a professional detailing. You’ll get the dirt off with the hose, but you may be dulling and damaging the paint in the process. A professional detail is going to make it look brand new again. For more severe or stubborn acne, see a dermatologist and then an esthetician for maintenance.
